Introduction by Frederick N. West
Has there ever been a time when people were so divided? Has there ever been a time when people were not divided? Always fighting over their political differences, this seems to be the human race, and often our pace. All people, we have always been like this, and far worse times can be found with just a quick turn of the page in your history book.
But we have been blessed with is beautiful quilted melodies drawn from every hue and color of skin. With every earthen born child and kin comes a voice that calls out for justice, purrs for peace, and sounds like suspended silver. We seek the Rosetta stone of harmonies that the better Angels cannot help but gather to. This is the world of the arts, where the dues you pay is in your skill and dedication, not in who your ancestors were or what political inflection you may herald from.
We ask, do you love to sing more than you love to debate and fulminate? If so, then you have a place in the choir. Yet we seek higher goals to harmonize not just our voices but the temperament of humanity, so that our rages do not burn the planet or destroy all creatures’ habitat. Not with law in books or codes, but law of musical harmony, we bring. Come together and join your voices in sounds of praise and comfort, joy, and songs we sing. Will you then agree on every issue that troubles your mind that is on your list? Well, no, but you will not easily count your fellow singer as your enemy.
Through the mist of time and all my rhymes, peace will be sculpted, polished, and shaped. It is the lasting jewell of this quarreling race. It is draped in Pieta beauty. Always we long for the community of song, and so we create, and thus we cope. Pray for children not yet born; we fill their cup, their world, full of hope.
Seattle Peace Chorus now brings you our virtual concert entitled, “Bringing People Together through Song.” We sure hope you enjoy our show. Thank you.
